hypodermic syringe

Instrument used for injecting fluids beneath the skin into either muscles or blood vessels. It consists of a small graduated tube with a close-fitting piston and a nozzle onto which a hollow needle can be fitted.

A needleless syringe was developed by a British firm 1994. It uses compressed gas to fire drugs, in powder form, painlessly through the skin at twice the speed of sound.
