iconology

A more detailed form of iconography that analyses the meaning of pictorial motifs and symbols within the context of their original significance. It is an approach to art history pioneered by Erwin Panofsky.

But the decoding can also become more properly iconological, to invoke Erwin Panofsky's distinction between the iconographer who is content to identify the referent and the iconologist who attempts to interpret it.
