ileostomy

In medicine, operation in which an artificial opening in the ileum is brought through the abdominal wall and a stoma (opening) is created. The stoma acts as an artificial anus and a bag is attached to collect waste material from the remainder of the gut. The operation is performed most often when the rectum is removed in patients with rectal cancer.
