immunodeficientLacking one or more elements of a working immune system. Immune deficiency is the term generally used for patients who are born with such a defect, while those who acquire such a deficiency later in life are referred to as immunocompromised or immunosuppressed. A serious impairment of the immune system is sometimes known as SCID, or severe combined immune deficiency. At one time children born with this condition would have died in infancy. They can now be kept alive in a germ-free environment, then treated with a bone-marrow transplant from a relative, to replace the missing immune cells. At present, the success rate for this type of treatment is still fairly low. See also gene therapy. How to thank TFD for its existence?
