Imperia

Resort town and capital of Imperia province in Liguria region, northwest Italy, 95 km/59 mi southwest of Genoa; population (1991) 40,200. Situated in the Riviera di Ponente, Imperia was formed in 1923 by the fusion of two communes: Oneglia (Savoy) and Port Maurizio (Piedmont). It is the centre of the olive oil trade of Liguria, and there are olive oil refineries; there is also pasta production and flour milling. It has a 19th-century neoclassical cathedral.

The military leader Andrea Doria, the artist Gregorio de Ferrari (c. 1644–1726), and the writer Edmondo de Amicis (1846–1908) were born here.
