implantation |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
implantationIn mammals, the process by which the developing embryo attaches itself to the wall of the mother's uterus and stimulates the development of the placenta. In humans it occurs 6-8 days after ovulation. In some species, such as seals and bats, implantation is delayed for several months, during which time the embryo does not grow; thus the interval between mating and birth may be longer than the gestation period. |
