impotence| In medicine, a physical inability to perform sexual intercourse (the term is not usually applied to women). Impotent men fail to achieve an erection, and this may be due to illness, the effects of certain drugs, or psychological factors. |
| In 1998 the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug Viagra for prescription to people who suffer from impotence. Viagra works by dilating the blood vessels of the penis and must be taken about an hour before intercourse. Side effects include headaches and fainting (due to dilation of blood vessels elsewhere), and blue tinted vision. |
| General fatigue or lack of interest may also cause impotence. Treatment for ongoing impotence includes counseling, behavioral therapy, and surgical implants. |
