Short

British aircraft manufacturers. The Type 184 seaplane in 1914 was the first aircraft to carry a torpedo and, during the World War I Gallipoli campaign, was the first aircraft to sink an enemy ship with a torpedo.

The firm began by making balloons in 1898 and only turned to aircraft in 1908. The company also manufactured a number of airships for the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service in their Bedford factory. In 1989 Short Brothers was bought by Bombardier Aerospace and now manufactures component parts for its parent company.
