induction coil |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.03 sec. |
induction coilType of electrical transformer, similar to an ignition coil, that produces an intermittent high-voltage alternating current from a low-voltage direct current supply. It has a primary coil consisting of a few turns of thick wire wound around an iron core and subjected to a low voltage (usually from a battery). Wound on top of this is a secondary coil made up of many turns of thin wire. An iron armature and make-and-break mechanism (similar to that in an electric bell) repeatedly interrupts the current to the primary coil, producing a high-voltage, rapidly alternating current in the secondary circuit. An induction motor employs alternating current. It comprises a stationary current-carrying coil (stator) surrounding another coil (rotor), which rotates because of the current induced in it by the magnetic field created by the stator; it thus requires no commutator. RocTool began experimenting with induction heating in 2001, at first casting induction coils into a ceramic tool with a thin (1 cm) metal skin. Often referred to as thixocasting, semi-solid metalcasting traditionally utilizes a metal ingot that is heated through several temperature stages in induction coils until it reaches a 50-50 liquid-to-solid ratio. During voltage measurements, the two induction coils are wired in series opposition to cancel background ac. |
