Pumactant was originally developed by Britannia in 1987 as a lung surfactant for Infant Respiratory Distress Syndrome and licensed in the UK as ALEC(R).
Surfaxin(TM) has been successfully tested in a Phase II trial in infant respiratory distress syndrome (IRDS) by Johnson & Johnson prior to the licensure of the technology.
Other causes include congenital pneumonia or sepsis, meconium aspiration, infant respiratory distress syndrome and congenital diaphragmatic hernia.
