EBV does cause infectious mononucleosis, hairy leukoplakia, and B-lymphoproliferative neoplasms in immunocompromised persons. A study published in the Annals of Neurology has found that adolescents and young adults who contract infectious mononucleosis (also known as glandular fever) may face a twofold risk of developing multiple sclerosis in later life. But if a person gets an Epstein-Barr infection after the onset of adolescence, the virus can cause infectious mononucleosis. |
