Bundle of nerve cells enclosed in a sheath of connective tissue and transmitting impulses to and from the brain and spinal cord. A single nerve may contain both motor and sensory nerve cells, but they function independently.

A series of holes parallel to the external corticotomy was made in the internal cortical layer to weaken it, as care was taken to avoid the inferior alveolar nerve.
Traumatic neuromas of the head and neck have been reported in the oral cavity, the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve, the inferior alveolar nerve of the mandible, the auriculotemporal nerve, the glossopharyngeal nerve, and the facial nerve.
The medial and lateral cortex of the mandible are separated at the ramus region, while the inferior alveolar nerve is preserved.
