initial public offering

Primary issue of a private company's ordinary shares to the public. This happens when a company wishes to list on a stock exchange or to raise capital. The issue of shares is generally managed by a financial institution, such as a merchant bank, which acts as an underwriter, organizing and promoting the issue and agreeing to purchase any unplaced shares.
