insectivoreAny animal whose diet is made up largely or exclusively of insects. In particular, the name is applied to mammals of the order Insectivora, which includes shrews, hedgehogs, moles, and tenrecs. Before our study, we trapped 66 rodents and insectivores in or near houses in Togo. Meerkats are primarily insectivores, but they are also known to eat birds and small mammals. They switched on the lights at dusk and scoured the illuminated tracts for red-backed salamanders, which are common nocturnal insectivores that hide when they're not hunting. |
