insolation weathering

    0.02 sec.

insolation weathering

Type of physical or mechanical weathering that involves the alternate heating and cooling of rocks and minerals. This causes expansion and contraction, particularly of dark minerals (because they absorb more heat), setting up stresses in rocks. As rocks are poor conductors of heat only the surface layer is affected. This may contribute to exfoliation (breaking away of the outer layer of rock).
