insoluble

In chemistry, describing a substance that does not dissolve in water. For example, calcium carbonate is insoluble and forms a suspension in water. It may be separated from water by filtration, passing the suspension through filter paper. Insoluble salts can be made by adding together solutions of two soluble salts. This is called a precipitation reaction, and the newly formed solid is called a precipitate.
