intersex

Individual that is intermediate between a normal male and a normal female in its appearance (for example, a genetic male that lacks external genitalia and so resembles a female).

Intersexes are usually the result of an abnormal hormone balance during development (especially during gestation) or of a failure of the genes controlling sex determination. The term hermaphrodite is sometimes erroneously used for intersexes.
