interstitial

In online advertising, message that pops up in between two pages of content. Interstitials can be an intrusive form of Web advertising. Traditional interstitials start streaming to the browser while the next page is downloading. This usually results in delayed access to the page and a disjointed viewing experience. New technology has reworked the interstitial format so that interstitials download to the viewer's browser only when there is no other content downloading. Interstitials also now support Flash, HTML, audio, and Java enabling advertisers to create eye-catching animated advertising.
