interstitial

In biology, undifferentiated tissue that is interspersed with the characteristic tissue of an organ. It is often formed of fibrous tissue and supports the organ. Interstitial fluid refers to the fluid present in small amounts in the tissues of an organ.

Traditional interstitials start streaming to the browser while the next page is downloading. This usually results in delayed access to the page and a disjointed viewing experience. Interstitials also now support Flash, HTML, audio, and Java enabling advertisers to create eye-catching animated advertising.
