intertropical convergence zone

Area of heavy rainfall found in the tropics and formed as the trade winds converge and rise to form cloud and rain. It moves a few degrees northwards during the northern summer and a few degrees southwards during the southern summer, following the apparent movement of the Sun. The ITCZ is responsible for most of the rain that falls in Africa. The doldrums are also associated with this zone.
