In medicine, space located between the arachnoid and the pia mater of the brain and spinal cord that contains the cerebrospinal fluid. Intrathecal injections of antibiotics may be given to treat infections of the central nervous system, such as meningitis.

Tisseel (2 ml) was injected into the right lateral intrathecal space through a 25-gauge intracath, which extended the passage of Tisseel down to the C6 level.
It uses Medtronic's SynchroMed Implantable Infusion System, which consists of a programmable drug pump connected to a thin tube, or catheter, to deliver precise amounts of a muscle relaxant called Lioresal([R]) Intrathecal (baclofen injection) directly to the intrathecal space - the fluid-filled area surrounding the spinal cord, the drug's site of action.
The SynchroMed system is used to treat all types of severe chronic pain by delivering small, controlled amounts of medication to the intrathecal space, the fluid-filled area in the spinal column through which pain signals travel.
