Introit

The first item of the Proper of the Mass, accompanying the entry of the ministers. Originally a complete psalm with antiphon before and after each verse, it was reduced in the Middle Ages to its present form of antiphon, psalm-verse, Gloria Patri and repeat of antiphonorary The antiphon is a freely composed melody, the psalm being sung to a slightly ornate psalm tone.
