swell

Device on the harpsichord and organ for the artificial production of crescendo and diminuendo, which these instruments are incapable of producing by touch. It takes various forms, the most successful being a contrivance in the form of a slatted blind (hence the name Venetian swell), which, opening and shutting by means of a pedal, increased or reduced the volume of tone.
