pyrite

Iron sulphide FeS2. It has a yellow metallic lustre and a hardness of 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale. It is used in the production of sulphuric acid.

Acid mine c drainage (AMD), caused by the physical and chemical weathering of sulfide-containing minerals such as iron pyrite, has been called one of the biggest threats to the environment in the United States.
Iron pyrite additions were used at one time to rectify the problem, but were dropped due to S contamination of the furnace linings.
It has a sandy floor covered with bits of iron pyrite, amethyst, and quartz crystals.
