Ironsides

Nickname of regiment raised by Cromwell in 1643 during the Civil War. It was noted for its discipline and religious fanaticism, and first won fame at the Battle of Marston Moor in 1644. The nickname came from that of ‘Ironside’ given Cromwell by Prince Rupert.
