The 1968 Harvard Ad Hoc Committee for Irreversible Coma published criteria that held that any organ that no longer functions, or has the possibility of functioning again, is, for all practical purposes, if not in reality, dead. In another, an impaired anesthesiologist on drugs was finally exposed after causing two women to lapse into irreversible comas. Dissolved in liquid or pudding, a 10,000-milligram dose of the barbiturate induces a deep, irreversible coma within minutes; death follows soon after. |
