irritable bowel syndrome

Condition characterized by episodes of lower abdominal pain with constipation or diarrhoea. The symptoms are caused by spasming of the colon but there is no underlying disease. The condition is often associated with stress or anxiety. It responds to antispasmodic drugs and measures to reduce stress.
