In medicine, the segregation of patients to prevent the spread of infection. Today, isolation is most often required for

patients who are at unusual risk, mainly those whose immune systems have been undermined by disease or suppressed by antirejection or cytotoxic drugs. Strict isolation is also practised to prevent infection due to antibiotic-resistant microbes (see nosocomial infection).
