jacaranda

Any of a group of tropical American trees belonging to the bignonia family, with fragrant wood and showy blue or violet flowers, commonly cultivated in the southern USA. (Genus Jacaranda, family Bignoniaceae.)

As well as native flora (some of the existing trees are surprisingly large), there are exotics like the jacarandas and mongolian plums which add colour to, for instance, the little avenue (Nield's decumanus) which runs from station to piazza.
A stand of coral trees compliments the brilliant orange and purple of giant birds of paradise, while jacarandas, cedar, sweet gum, camphor and fig trees provide textured counterpoint to the windmill, date and Mexican fan palms that are an integral part of the landscape.
