But it's easy to see why Jaleos was a showstopper in its 1996 City Center premiere. The merengue accordion and saxophone style is based on riffs called jaleos that dovetail with tambora and guira rhythms and dance movements in a typically African-influenced aesthetic. Thisi ensemble of fine dancers gave a surprisingly lackluster interpretation of Hans van Manen's Grosse Fuge and closed the program with an insouciant performance of Ullate's lengthy Jaleos. |
