Inspired by Duke Ellington's jazzy version of Tchaikovsky's original, Drika Overton, producer and creator of Clara's Dream: A Jazz Nutcracker, adds a rhythmic flare with Irish dancers, jazz dancers, body-percussionists, lindy hoppers, and tap dancers. With her jazzy 'tude, the Detroit chanteuse turns out a breezy ``What to Say'' over bossa nova rhythms, raps about ``Killing Time'' and pours her soul into ``You Wanted It. Most of the time this works well, encouraging readers-aloud to perform the text with a jazzy rhythm and to emphasize the occasional large, bold-type word like one of Dizzy's sudden high blats. |
