Another name for the tropical disease leishmaniasis. The word comes from Hindi for ‘black fever’.

Visceral leishmaniasis or kala-azar, the often fatal form of the disease, is caused by species of the Leishmania donovani complex.
This causes a potentially fatal, wasting disease named kala-azar - Hindi for "black sickness," so called because of the victims' darkening skin.
