Karakul

The name of two lakes in Central Asia. The larger is a brackish, stagnant lake in the northern Pamirs of Tajikistan; area 380 sq km/146 sq mi. The smaller lies near the Tajik border, within the northwestern Chinese autonomous region of Xinjiang Uygur; this deep mountain lake (Chinese Kalakuli Hu) stands between the peaks of Muztagh Ata and Kongur Shan, and is renowned for its beauty.
