kelpCollective name for a group of large brown seaweeds. Kelp is also a term for the powdery ash of burned seaweeds, a source of iodine. (Typical families Fucaceae and Laminariaceae.) The brown kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera), abundant in Antarctic and sub-Antarctic waters, is one of the fastest-growing living things, reaching lengths of up to 100 m/320 ft. It is farmed for the alginate industry, its rapid surface growth allowing cropping several times a year, but it is an unwanted pest in North Atlantic waters. |

The name Sargasso comes from the Spanish word "sargazzo" which signifies kelp. After a whole day spent in this employment, he would return about nightfall with several cocoanut shells filled with different descriptions of kelp. It feeds entirely on shell-fish from the kelp and tidal rocks: hence the beak and head, for the purpose of breaking them, are surprisingly heavy and strong: the head is so strong that I have scarcely been able to fracture it with my geological hammer; and all our sportsmen soon discovered how tenacious these birds were of life. |
