kelpie

Breed of small herding dog also known as the Australian sheepdog. Bred from imported collie stock crossed with dingo, it is much valued as a working dog. It has a coarse black or dark-coloured coat and is about 50 cm/20 in tall.

kelpie

In Scottish folklore, a water spirit in the form of a shaggy horse (sometimes a man) who appears as a warning to those destined to be drowned. He sometimes entices travellers to ride on his back, then plunges into a river so that the rider is drowned.

I could well understand the story of the Water Kelpie, that demon of the streams, who is fabled to keep wailing and roaring at the ford until the coming of the doomed traveller.
