Kendo competition, Japan. One of the Japanese martial arts, kendo is derived from the skills of Samurai warriors with the sword. Now a form of sport, bamboo staves are used in place of swords.

Japanese armed martial art in which combatants fence with bamboo replicas of samurai swords. Masks and padding are worn for protection. The earliest recorded reference to kendo is from AD 789.
