keratinFibrous protein found in the skin of vertebrates and also in hair, nails, claws, hooves, feathers, and the outer coating of horns. The fungus attacks the keratin layer of the skin of amphibians, and damages it. We postulated that patients whose corneocytes fail to separate probably lack some substance that destroys the attachments that bind individual corneocytes to each other, thereby maintaining the integrity of the superficial keratin layer. These products contain ceramide, a substance that exists in the keratin layer of the skin, which gives protection from outside elements and retains moisture. |
