kilobyteIn computing, a unit of memory equal to 1,024 bytes. It is sometimes used, less precisely, to mean 1,000 bytes. In the metric system, the prefix ‘kilo-’ denotes multiplication by 1,000 (as in kilometre, a unit equal to 1,000 metres). However, computer memory size is based on the binary number system, and the most convenient binary equivalent of 1,000 is 210, or 1,024. How to thank TFD for its existence?
