kimberlite |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Financial, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
kimberliteIgneous rock that is ultramafic (containing very little silica); a type of alkaline peridotite with a porphyritic texture (larger crystals in a fine-grained matrix), containing mica in addition to olivine and other minerals. Kimberlite represents the world's principal source of diamonds. Kimberlite is found in carrot-shaped pipelike intrusions called diatremes, where mobile material from very deep in the Earth's crust has forced itself upwards, expanding in its ascent. The material, brought upwards from near the boundary between crust and mantle, often altered and fragmented, includes diamonds. Diatremes are found principally near Kimberley, South Africa, from which the name of the rock is derived, and in the Yakut area of Siberia, Russia. How to thank TFD for its existence? The partners announced in late April evidence of a third kimberlite about eight kilometres north of De Beers Canada's proposed Victor diamond mine project near Attawapiskat. This project is known as the Stella Polaris Project and it has been disclosed that there is the presence of a large pyrope dominated kimberlite indicator dispersion plume in the Wyoming craton in southern Saskatchewan. As reported earlier (news release of October 7, 2005), till samples were collected over selected geophysical targets within the Parry Peninsula Kimberlite Field and in the vicinity of existing till sample anomalies as well as in the previously unsampled regions of the central claim block. |
