king's evil

Another name for the skin condition scrofula. In medieval England and France, it was thought that the touch of an anointed king could cure the condition.

According to tradition, touching for the king's evil began in France with Clovis, and in England with Edward the Confessor, but no instances have been found before Louis IX and Edward III.
