Any of a group of perennial plants native to Africa, in particular K. uvaria, with a flame-coloured spike of flowers. (Genus Kniphofia, family Liliaceae.)

Colour and texture were introduced by including: Verbena bonarensis, Kniphofia and Agapanthus species, and ornamental grasses including: Festuca glauca, Phormium varieties and Hebe cupressoides, to reflect light, adding another dimension to the planting.
