data mining

Analysis of computer data to determine trends. It is used by retailers to find out those items often purchased together. For example, one supermarket chain found that purchases of nappies and beer were linked, and so increased sales by putting beer next to nappies. Store ‘loyalty cards’ enable retailers to profile customers' week-by-week shopping against their age, sex, and address.
