knowledge-based systemComputer program that uses an encoding of human knowledge to help solve problems. It was discovered during research into artificial intelligence that adding heuristics (rules of thumb) enabled programs to tackle problems that were otherwise difficult to solve by the usual techniques of computer science. Chess-playing programs have been strengthened by including knowledge of what makes a good position, or of overall strategies, rather than relying solely on the computer's ability to calculate variations. KBS Rubber, recently developed by Rapra, is a knowledge-based system for rubber on CD-ROM, a resource of reference material, technical abstracts and software tools for the development and optimization of rubber materials, manufacturing and products. The unit of storage in a knowledge-based system is an if/then rule, similar to a record in a date base. This knowledge-based system was developed through extensive testing by clinicians working with Draeger Medical, allowing SmartCare to become fully interactive and responsive to the demands of the patient. |
