kōanIn Zen Buddhism, a superficially nonsensical question or riddle used by a Zen master to help a pupil achieve satori (enlightenment). It is used in the Rinzai school of Zen. A kōan supposedly cannot be understood through the processes of logic; its solution requires attainment of a higher level of insight. An often repeated example is ‘What is the sound of one hand clapping?’

These are mostly koans and the Shobogenzo of Dogen Zenji. first, they resound almost as koans if one is patient enough. Zen practice, with its solitary meditation, koans to help bypass the thinking mind, and the "radical freedom" that comes with independent thought, says: "The past is gone, the future is not here, and the present appears for an instant. |
