kotoPlucked Japanese string instrument; a long zither of ancient Chinese origin with 13 silk or nylon strings stretched over moveable bridges. It rests on the floor and the strings are plucked with ivory plectrums worn on the thumb and two fingers of the right hand. The left hand presses the strings behind the bridges to alter the tuning, add ornaments, and create effects such as vibrato and slide. The koto produces a brittle sound.
