| In Europe, private research laboratories have been used since the 16th century, and by the 18th century laboratories were also used for teaching. The German chemist Justus van Liebig established a laboratory 1826 in Giessen, Germany, where he not only instructed his students in the art of experimental chemistry, but also undertook chemical research with them. |
