Laguna

Province of central Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 1,760 sq km/ 680 sq mi; population (1995) 1,631,000. The capital is Santa Cruz. The province partially surrounds Laguna de Bay, the largest lake in the Philippines (1,760 sq km/680 sq mi), which has a large fishing industry. Laguna is mountainous (highest peaks are San Cristobal 1,490 m/4,888 ft, and Makiling 1,146 m/3,760 ft), with fertile valleys which produce copra, rice, sugar, hemp, and corn, mainly for the Manila market. Hot springs near Laguna de Bay are a tourist attraction.
