Lanai

Sixth-largest island of Hawaii, to the west of Maui, south of Molokai, and northwest of Kahoolawe; area 363 sq km/140 sq mi. It was formed by the extinct volcano Palawai, with its highest point at Lanaihale, 1,028 m/3,370 ft above sea level. The hub of the island is Lanai City (population (2000) 3,200), situated in the centre.

The island was used mainly for cattle grazing before 1922, when it was purchased by the Dole corporation and developed into a pineapple plantation. The remains of the village of Kaunolu on the south coast, once a resort of King Kamehameha I, are a local attraction.
