Lander

City and administrative headquarters of Fremont County, west-central Wyoming, on the Popo Agie River, 190 km/120 mi west of Casper; population (2000) 6,900. A ranching, farming, and mining trade centre, it also has a large state mental institution, outdoor recreation and environmental concerns, the state winter fair, and government offices.

Camp Augur, a military post, was established here in 1869, and the South Pass gold rush brought brief prosperity.
