lantern fly

One of a number of mainly tropical fly species, most of which have a narrow head that is drawn out into a long process. In some species this process looks like a lantern. Many lantern flies are large, with wing span up to 15 cm/6 in.

The head process contains a pouchlike diverticulum of the gut. The name lantern fly was originally given to the South American species Lanternaria phosphorea.

Classification

The lantern fly is a member of the family Fulgoridae, of suborder Homoptera, order Hemiptera, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.
